Meet Gayle Schliemann

Recently headquartered in Chicagoland, I am a fiction author who reaches an international audience. While I started writing to cope with anxiety and insomnia, it has proven to be much more than therapeutic. Along with Stopping Inertia and the upcoming Cursing Django, I have many books in the works, so be on the lookout!

My Background

I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Performance in 1995 without a clue of what I was going to do with my life. A move from Richmond, Virginia, to Montpelier, Vermont, gave me quite the culture shock (not to mention the change in weather). I started working in a local quilt store and ultimately opened my own sewing store, becoming an expert seamstress, quilter and knitter.

Being a store proprietor gave me A LOT of anxiety and severe insomnia due to the pressures of running a business. I started writing to help me relax. They say ownership has its priviledges, and yes, I snuck away from the store whenever I could to write. I wrote all of the time, especially because of how little I slept.

I started writing about the funny stories my Mother told be about growing up poor in New Creek, West Virginia and sprinkled them in with other equally fascinating tales from my Father who was raised in Elk Garden, a few towns over where my first book takes place. Of course my writing is purely fiction. Sadly, my father passed away in December of 2008, just months before I finished writing Stopping Inertia, and just recently I also lost my mom. Although my family is no longer physically with me, their spirits live in my writing.
